Optum CEO Patrick Conway, M.D., will be playing double duty as UnitedHealth Group has named him chief executive of its Optum Health unit, a spokesperson confirmed.
Conway, took the helm of Optum in early May after serving as CEO of Optum Rx, the sprawling company’s pharmacy benefit management division. He’s a veteran of the insurance industry and policy space, and has held leadership roles at Optum Health in the past.
Media reports first surfaced Thursday about Conway’s new role, with Bloomberg citing an internal memo.
The spokesperson said that the shift reflects the company’s “intentional approach” to developing its leaders.
““The strength of this organization lies in our resilience, restlessness and the profound sense of compassion and accountability we feel to make health care work better for every person who needs it,” they said.
“Leadership changes are consistent with the company’s longstanding, intentional approach to develop an executive team with a range of experiences across its diverse portfolio of businesses and in ongoing service to its mission and the people it serves,” the spokesperson said.
Current Optum Health CEO Amir Desai, who has served in the role since 2023, will step into the role of president of Optum integrated care and vice-chairman of Optum Health, per Bloomberg.
The company has faced a rocky start to the year that saw CEO Andrew Witty step down, replaced by UnitedHealth veteran Stephen Hemsley. UHG’s first quarter earnings fell short of Wall Street’s expectations due to elevated costs, with both its Medicare Advantage plans and Optum Health feeling the sting.
