Noom to begin offering oral medications for weight loss

Digital health company Noom is expanding its medication offerings to include oral drugs for weight loss, starting with metformin.

Noom Med with Metformin will be available for $29 in the first month and then $89 per month after as a three-month recurring subscription, according to an announcement from the company. While metformin is a common treatment for diabetes, it can also be prescribed off-label for weight loss, Noom said.

Metformin can assist patients in losing weight through appetite management and enhanced insulin sensitivity, which lowers blood sugar, according to the announcement. Patients will receive the drug in a 500 milligram tablet and will be put on a medication schedule that is designed to drive weight loss.

When a patient joins the program, Noom’s clinicians will review their eligibility for the prescription. If approved, they’ll receive their first prescription in the mail in seven days, according to the announcement.

Geoff Cook, CEO of Noom, said that because metformin is available as a generic it presents a lower-cost option for people who may benefit from medication-assisted weight loss.

“Combining medication with behavior change is powerful because the patient is more likely to experience early success, leading to a greater likelihood to stick with the program and transform a new habit into permanent lifestyle change,” he said in the press release. “With the addition of oral medications, we provide a meaningful weight loss treatment option at a lower price.”

Patients who enroll in Noom Med with Metformin will also have access to asynchronous telehealth services, care coordinators, one-on-one weight coaching and medication fulfillment through Noom’s partner pharmacies.

Metformin will be made available to eligible Noom Weight members beginning in the first quarter of 2025, the company said.
