Amazon Pharmacy will make Novo Nordisk’s Ozempic pill available for home delivery, the company announced Thursday.
Per the announcement, Amazon customers will be able to secure the oral GLP-1 medication via same-day delivery or pickup within minutes at its kiosks in short order. The drug, which is approved to manage blood sugar in individuals with type 2 diabetes, was originally sold as Rybelsus but was recently rebranded to Ozempic by Novo.
Amazon said that making the drug available via its pharmacy will address “a critical access gap for the more than 36 million Americans living with type 2 diabetes.”
Individuals with a prescription for oral Ozempic can order the drug through Amazon Pharmacy as well as access key availability and transparent pricing data, even if they are not Prime members, the company said. Pricing is as low as $25 per month with insurance coverage.
“Amazon Pharmacy continues to provide customers expanded selection and reliable, convenient access to the latest treatments like the Ozempic pill for type 2 diabetes, helping reduce the friction that comes with accessing breakthrough medications,” said Tanvi Patel, vice president and general manager of Amazon Pharmacy, in the press release.
“With 24/7 access to licensed pharmacists, same-Day and next-day delivery and caregiver support for loved ones managing chronic conditions, we are making it easy for customers to get the medication they need to stay healthy,” Patel said.
Same-day delivery will be available in close to 3,000 cities and towns, with plans to expand to 4,500 by the end of the year, Amazon said. Next-day, two-day or three-day shipping options will also be available in regions where mail order generally takes between five and 10 days, according to the announcement.
The kiosks, which are managed by pharmacists, are at select One Medical locations and can allow customers to avoid long lines at the pharmacy counter, Amazon said.
Amazon said it has been delivering GLP-1 medications since 2021. It’s generated $200 million in savings for customers through its automatic coupon program, with GLP-1s making up a large portion of those savings.
