OpenAI acquires Torch to build out ChatGPT Health

OpenAI acquired Torch, a healthcare startup that unifies lab results, medications and recordings from doctor visits, as the foundation artificial intelligence model company builds out ChatGPT Health.

The Information reported the deal was valued at around $100 million.

The team at Torch, including Ilya Abyzov, Eugene Huang, James Hamlin and Ryan Oman, will join OpenAI as part of the acquisition, OpenAI announced Monday afternoon on social media.

“We started Torch to build a medical memory for AI, unifying scattered records into a context engine that helps you see the full picture, connect the dots, and make sure nothing important gets lost in the noise again,” Torch executives said on the company’s website.

The Torch app, which is only a year old, is designed to gather users’ medical information from hospitals, labs, wearables and consumer testing companies into one place.

Last week, OpenAI launched ChatGPT Health, a new feature that connects its AI chatbot with users’ medical records and wellness apps for more personalized answers to medical questions.

People already are using publicly available AI chatbots to ask healthcare-related questions. More than 800 million regular users of ChatGPT, 1 in 4, submits a prompt about healthcare every week, according to OpenAI. More than 40 million turn to ChatGPT every day with healthcare questions, according to an OpenAI report.
