23.6M have signed up for ACA plans during open enrollment: CMS

More than 23 million people have selected coverage on the Affordable Care Act’s exchange as part of open enrollment, according to data from the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services.

CMS said that the 23.6 million signups to date includes 3.2 million new enrollees. That means the number of people with marketplace coverage has grown by 11.6 million since the 2021 open enrollment period.

About 20.4 million people who had coverage in 2024 either selected a new plan for 2025 or were automatically renewed into their previous plan, according to the agency. This continues to be on pace to set a new record for plan selections, CMS said.

““We can’t lose sight of what’s behind our tremendous, record-setting progress: Millions of individuals and families who now have a critical connection to the lifeline of health care coverage,” said CMS Administrator Chiquita Brooks-LaSure in a press release.

Of the people who have signed up so far, 16.7 million found a plan on Healthcare.gov, while 6.9 million used a state-based exchange.

CMS said that four in five people looking for coverage on the marketplace can secure a plan that costs $10 or less each month thanks to enhanced premium tax credits. Whether the Feds will take action to extend the tax credits is unclear, as the enhanced subsidies are set to expire at the end of 2025.

Open enrollment on Healthcare.gov continues through Jan. 15. Health officials urged individuals who had yet to secure a plan to consider the exchanges as an option.

“Nearly 24 million people, a record number, have signed up for Marketplace coverage — and the Open Enrollment Period is not over yet,” HHS Secretary Xavier Becerra said in the release. .”The Affordable Care Act health insurance marketplace and reforms have proven to be successful and critically important for millions of Americans and their families,”
